How many of you have been in a court room? How many of you have gone before a judge? It can be very intimidating because the judge has incredible power.  He can fine you, jail you, make your life miserable. So, most sane people are intimidated by the judge and seek to do and say what might not offend the judge. But not Peter, he confronts the court with their sin using their own Scriptures. We fear a judge who can at the most fine us or give us some jail time, but Peter is fearless in the face of what could be physical torture–thirty nine lashes.

Then Peter gives them a way out he tells them that what they have done, the have done in ignorance. Opening the door for the city of refuge. Then he tells them that forgiveness is available in Jesus name.

Because of the audiovisual effect of Pentecost, a crowd gathered around, giving Peter the opportunity to preach. In that crowd were two kinds of people. One kind ultimately thought everything that was happening was ridiculous. They rationalized it away by saying, "They are drunk." Today people still respond to the Gospel this way, "You are wasting your life believing a myth. I’m glad it makes you happy, but . . . (what an idiot)." There will always be this response from some, there will always be mockers.
There were others there who were asking, "What does this mean? What is going on?" So Peter stands up and addresses both groups

The "just" is referring to believers; we as Christians are to live by faith. This 11th chapter is not an explanation of how to be saved. It is rather a call to perseverance in faith, whatever the odds. In this chapter we have an extended list of examples of Old Testament men and women who lived by faith in the midst of great persecution and tribulation.

There was a noise like a violent, rushing wind. No wind, just noise. This would get their attention. The Greek word used here for wind is most often translated "breath of life". Luke uses this particular word here to stress the life-giving breath of God, as symbolized by the sound of wind.

Notice also that there are tongues of fire.

Whatever else the Bible is, it is a book which communicates information verbally. That means that it is filled with words. Thoughts are expressed through relationships of those words. Each individual word contributes something to the whole of the content expressed. The better understanding we have of the individual words used in biblical statements the better we will be able to understand the total message of Scripture. Accurate communication and clear understanding are difficult when words are used imprecisely or ambiguously. Misuses of words and misunderstanding go hand in hand.

But before we do I want to talk this morning about "Understanding the Bible." I’m sure that you are aware that that is not a simple thing to do. All you have to do is look around at all the different churches with all their different beliefs, which they say come from the Bible, and it is easy to see that understanding the Bible is not that easy.
There are good and godly men who disagree about every doctrine the Bible teaches. Some read the Bible and end up Arminians and others read the same Bible and are Calvinists. Some study Scripture and are Charismatics others study the same Scripture and are not charismatic. When it comes to the subject of eschatology, the end times, we have dispensationalists some of whom are pre-trib, mid-trib, or post trib. We also have premillenialists, post millinialists and amillenialists. Then we have partial-preterists and preterists. Wow! They all read the same Bible and yet they see things so differently. This should tell us that understanding the Bible is not a simple task.

It answers a question all of us have asked at one time or another: Why is it such a struggle for me to live the Christian life? We’ve all wondered about that, haven’t we?
You may have expressed it this way: "I thought by now I wouldn’t struggle so much with anger. Why is it taking me so long to grow in the Christian life?"  Or, "I still get tempted by pornography. Why is it taking me so long to grow?" Or, "I go to church every Sunday, but I still have so many doubts. Why is it taking me so long to grow?" Or,  "I thought I’d be a better person by now, but I’ve got so many bad habits. Why is it taking me so long to grow?" Or, "I’m a bitter person even though I cover it up most of the time. Why is it taking me so long to grow?"

It is imperative that what we believe about God is true. What we believe about God-theology proper-affects how we live. Theology is very practical, it touches our lives every day; worry, anxiety, fear, and depression can all be the result of faulty theology. A proper view of God is what strengthens us in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances.

These men and women were all familiar with the Scriptures, and the Scriptures clearly taught that Christ would rise from the dead. We saw in our last study that Christ’s death and burial were both predicted in the Feasts of the Lord. These feasts also predicted His resurrection. These seven feasts represent and typify the sequence, timing, and significance of the major events of the Lord’s redemptive career.
